Please excuse my poorly worded title. Replaced the water pump and thermostat at 70k.

E46 330 heater not working. If the fan speed is behaving normally, then your FSR is more than likely fine. Hi all just thought i would let you know i recently brought a 2000 e46 bmw. 25 thoughts on “ BMW E46 Heater Fan Not Working Correctly ” Robin at 6:29 pm. Thanks so much for this. Followed the links and managed to extract the FSR, and through other links took out the black rubbery gunge on top and resoldered the faulty joints.

Currently have 94k.Tonight got yellow overheat warning light. Then it turned red and I stopped immediately. Let the car cool off. Started up and a few minutes it did the same.

Working

Yellow overheat warning. I pulled over again. My initial thought was that it was the same symptoms as when then water pump originally crapped out. Only this time, I noticed the radiator fan was not spinning.

Last time, when it was the water pump, the radiator fan was running overtime. So the question is. Does it sound like the cause of overheating is probably a broken radiator fan/fuse?Just looking for some mental reassurance til I can bring it into my mechanic Monday. Thanks in advance. Start the car. Turn on the AC.

The electric fan should run. If it doesn't, the fan or its control circuitry must be investigated to determine the failure.

If the fan does run, then the water pump is most likely the culprit.Rule #1 with BMWs: The very second you see any evidence of an overheat warning, you pull off the side of the road, shut off the engine, and call a flatbed. No exceptions, because if you think maintaining a BMW is expensive, get a quote for an engine rebuild. Older BMWs use relays to control the aux fan. Modern (E46+) use solid state speed controls, and they're integrated into the fan, potted in and not repairable.

The entire fan must be replaced.assuming this is the problem. If that is the problem, get ready to bend over when you see the price.I'd still test the water pump despite its relatively little time in service. There's a way to do that without needing the SSS (BMW diagnostic system) connected that's used to bleed the cooling system.

Problem is I don't know the procedure so I can't advise you there. Sounds like you're on the right track. The fan should have been on @ 100% during an overheat situation. Cabal ext fortune pig. The fan will usually store a fault in the dme for activation or ihka system faulted for excess pressure (because fan is not coming on). Check power and ground at the fan connector.

E46 Fan Not Spinning

The fan has a final stage resistor built in so it gets a pwm signal for activation and speed. Someone else had a good suggestion of putting the ac on to check fan operation. When the aux fan fails, over heats usually happen in traffic or slow vehicle speeds.
