Aku mau ceritakan buku favoritku, yaitu Ulysses Moore. Buku terbitan Erlangga for Kids. Pertama kali aku tau buku ini dari perpustakaan daerah di tempatku, aku tertarik saat melihat sampul bukunya, terus ku baca aja sinopsisnya, sepertinya seru, akhirnya ku pinjam deh bukunya. Dari situ aku mulai suka sama buku Ulysses Moore. The characters have some interesting quirks and the mystery is suspenseful. Each chapter ends on a cliff-hanger, which would keep the more reluctant readers moving through the story. This book takes place in the modern day England in a hidden town called Kilmore Cove. The story is told from the perspective of a boy from London named Jason, who believes in ghosts and always likes a good mystery, his twin sister: Julia, who believes that ghosts are not real and that her brother is crazy, and their new friend, Rick, who knows much of Kilmore Cove for he has lived there all his life. Jason and Julia are moving into a house with many secrets called Argo Manor that had a supposedly mad previous owner: Ulysses Moore.

They first meet their care taker, Nestor who shows them around the house. One room catches Jason’s eye, one that had been there through the Middle Ages as a part of a castle's keep. Their parents are going back to London to finish up the moving process and leave the children with Nestor, so they invite their new friend, Rick, over to investigate the room.

There they notice a door that looks the oldest. It was beaten almost to the breaking point. Curiosity makes Jason want to look inside, but the door is locked. But Jason does not give up so easilyOne of the best parts of the book is when Jason falls off of the cliff and finds a secret message hidden in a package inside a secret crevice in the rock.

It is in a code that they find in a book called ‘Dictionary of Forgotten Languages’. Once decoded, it reads “When the grotto’s seems defeat, these earth-lights you may use to shine upon the fleet that takes you where you choose” (80). Not only was the fact that Jason almost falls to his death exciting, but when they decode the message was intriguing as well. After they translate it into English, it still is a riddle that needed to be put together with other clues they find throughout the book. This book is similar to another mystery book called The Westing Game.

Both books are about a mysterious mansion and their old owner that died and gave their house away (although The Westing Game was about people earning it by finding out who had killed the old owner). Both books embrace the idea that dead people can change life for the living. In The Door to Time, Ulysses Moore gives Jason, Julia, and Rick clues to how to open the door and to what is inside of it (or so Jason believes). In The Westing Game, the old owner, Samuel W. Westing, sends letters to a few trustworthy people (and one not so trustworthy person) that he wants to solve the question of who killed him so that they can get his earnings.

This is also true in life. A dying person’s best wish is usually done in their honor. People that enjoy mystery books should read this book because there is always a riddle to solve, and the answer always amazes the reader. First off, the book is marketed as being Ulysses Moore, but is actually written by someone from Italy and has been translated to English. The twins are 11 and Rick is 12, but, at times, their dialogue and knowledge base far exceeds their ages.Still, the story is interesting enough and there is an air of mystery surrounding the twins’ home on the cliffside. The manor’s caretaker, Nester, is hard to figure out, which I like. I never really knew what to expect from the book, but at the same time, I wasn’t really that into it either. The children talk about things that were kind of over my head and I don’t see how middle grade aged children can really get a feel for something that they don’t really understand.Aside from that, the story had its pros.

Like I said, the mystery will keep the reader guessing about what’s going to happen and as the children discover more and more, it’s hard to put the book down. Budding explorers will get a kick out of The Door to Time, but they have to want it because the story moves fairly slowly. The ending is what the entire book should have been about, but since it wasn’t, I can only imagine that the second book, The Long-Lost Map, is much more exciting.Opening line: The house appeared suddenly from around the bend.

There are so many cool questions and possibilities that it is hard to put it down to eat dinner or go to the bathroom or anything else (like come to work)! Good for girls and boys, probably fourth grade and up. But, I would also be okay with giving it to a 7th or 8th grader who is either reading a bit below grade level (it doesn't look like a 'little kid' book) or who is just looking for a quick, good read- especially one with out any grown-up issues.Update- very addictive! They are aimed at a somewhat younger audience than Harry Potter but nonetheless I decided to read it. They made me nostalgic for the days when I was enraptured by Enid Blyton's novels. I love the illustrations nicely drawn in pencil adding to the enjoyment of the story. I liked the characters of Jason, Julia and Rick and not too many adults getting in the way as the parents are soon packed off to town on an errand.

The story very much evoked 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' especially with the theme of youth and having to believe in the magic in order for it to work. I would highly recommend this book, great fun and the final chapter makes it clear that the adventure has only just begun. In fact this first book is really just an introduction to the 'proper' story to come. There is no bad language, or anything scary really so can be read by all ages. Great to be read out loud and the short chapters I would say would be excellent for this. Will definitely be reading on. I keep looking for a good journey and puzzle book, and this book followed that format, but it isn't the book I've been searching for. Just when the story got going it was over and “to be continued.” I don’t mind a cliffhanger in a book or tv series, but this book was left very unfinished. It was a good attempt and may get kids more interested in learning about Greek mythology and ancient languages.

It ended on a pretty abrupt 'read the next book!' Sort of note, which disappointed me a little - I hate when a book can't simply stand alone and be strong enough without its sequel - but otherwise I'd recommend it for a short, exciting (without being overwhelming or scary for little kids)read. I enjoyed the puzzle aspects of the book and think that it has the potential to be an interesting series (the ending hints that this first book was the just the tiniest tip of an introduction to a whole new world of adventure). I would compare it to the Spiderwick Chronicles—the first book is like the first chapter.

The kids are also outrageously smart, knowing things that no sane (I hesitate to say 'teenager') would know. And they don't act British at all, a crime for the setting!

Strange book, one and a half stars. I found a secret door behind an armoire, and now we have four strange keys left by Ulysses. I'm sure there must be a secret passage behind the door, and then our adventure will truly begin. The only limit is our imagination. Most of this book read like a mystery, as the kids tried to figure out clues left around the property.

The fantasy genre didn't kick in until the story neared the end, so the rest of the series should be more fantastic. The three kids made an interesting team due to their different talents. Jason was the adventuring risk-taker, Roger was intelligent with knowledge of local history, and Julia was supportive of her brother, although they maintained some playful banter throughout the plot.

The only suspense in the plot came from the pursuit of solving the clues, so I didn't feel emotionally invested. Nothing opposed the children's efforts beyond their own mental and physical abilities. I didn't understand why a female character made a cameo appearance early in the story, since she wasn't much of a factor.

She wanted to gain possession of the manor, but her interest and efforts had no effect on the events. I'm guessing she'll become more important in the future, but I didn't think she was needed in this book.

Overall, The Door to Time was a nice blend of adventure and mystery and should appeal to most upper elementary readers. Disappointment; there's no other word to describe it. I believe this book is the first of many in a series, however, there is little to be excited about. The story starts slow but never picks up. The entire book revolves around three kids who try to solve a mystery in a mansion on a cliff.
